Getting your paperwork together before you apply can save days. Here’s a simple checklist. Not every lender asks for everything, but having these on hand makes things smoother.

About you

  • Photo ID. A driver licence or passport.
  • Contact and address details. Including your current address and how long you’ve lived there.
  • Employment details. Your employer, role and how long you’ve been there.

Your income

  • If you’re employed: recent payslips and, often, bank statements showing your pay.
  • If you’re self-employed: recent tax returns and notices of assessment, and sometimes BAS statements or accountant’s letters.

Your commitments

  • Details of existing loans, credit cards and buy-now-pay-later accounts.
  • A rough picture of your regular expenses.

The asset you’re buying

  • A quote, invoice or contract of sale.
  • For vehicles, boats and caravans: the make, model, year and, if you have it, the VIN or serial number.
  • For a private sale: the seller’s details.

Why we ask for so much

By law, a broker has to make reasonable enquiries about your requirements and finances and take reasonable steps to check the information, to make sure a loan isn’t unsuitable for you. The more complete your information, the quicker that goes.
